What do you need to know when hiring an electrician?

Are you looking for an electrician to do work on your home or business? How do you choose one? There are many people who claim to have the skill of an electrician, so it may be hard to determine which one you should go with. What should you look for when hiring an electrician?

1.) Make sure your electrician is licensed.

In order for an electrician to be qualified in their trade, he or she needs a valid state license along with proof of insurance. You want someone who is insured in case of any incidents. When they come to give you an estimate, you can ask to see a copy of their documents in order to help ensure that the work will be done by a professional with accurate knowledge. This helps reinforce your confidence that the electrician will do the job in compliance with correct safety standards.

2.) Written Estimates.

Make sure you have details on exactly what services the electrician is providing. Find out what needs to be done and why. It will help you be completely prepared for how long you can expect the job to take and the exact cost that you can anticipate spending.

3.) Check out their references and reviews.

You can learn a lot about a company or electrician from reviews of people who have had work done by them. Do you know anyone who had the electrician do similar work for them? Ask around. People are normally very forth coming with whether or not they were happy with a service done.  If you can’t find anyone who had work done by them, there’s always the internet. Read reviews online and see what the majority of their customers say.

4.) Do they have proper permits?

For most larger jobs, permits are required before performing the work.  In most cases a building inspector needs to approve any electrical work that is done. Make sure you confirm that your electrician are getting proper permits for the work to be done.

5.) Area of expertise.

There are many specialty areas in the electrical field. For example, some deal more directly with fixing heavy industrial machines where as others work with smaller control wires for alarm systems and internet access installation. They may have similar training but they are experts in different areas of the field. You want to make sure that you are choosing an electrician that specializes in the work that you need done.

By taking these precautions, you can get a skilled electrician who will do the work safely, cost efficiently and correctly.

VFD

What is a VFD and what does it do?

A Variable Frequency Drive (AKA a VFD), can be used in a lot of fields. A VFD is a type of motor controller that drives an electric motor by the varying frequency and voltage that is supplied to the electric motor. They are widely used to control the speed of AC motors such as conveyor systems, pump speeds, blower speeds or other applications that require variable speed with variable torque.

Why use it?

A VFD is a great energy saver and recognizes automation. You are able to control the amount of air flow, the amount of pressure and the motor can be adjusted according to seasons along with day/night. This helps to conserve unnecessary energy use.

This also can provide higher machine efficiency. Conventionally, the rotation speed of a main spindle on a piece of machinery is controlled by the speed of a pulley. By using a VFD, you are able to make these speed changes simpler. This can result in being able to downsize machines. You can also control the speed to be conducive with what is moving on the conveyor belt. Slowing it down for items that may wobble and fall over, or to go faster with things that can handle the speed, making production time faster.

How to save money Part 2

Hey Guys! I promised to give you more ways to save money! so here it is! Section 2 of the article from last week. Enjoy!

1.) You would be surprised how much energy is wasted on lights being turned on in rooms you aren’t in. So make it a habit to shut off the lights when you leave a room.

2.) When you have a fan running, the only way you benefit from it and feel cooler is if your in front or under it. Leaving it on doesn’t keep your room cool. so save money by shutting them off when your not using them.

3.) Cover your windows. In the summer when the heat comes in through your windows it makes your air conditioner work even harder. Block out the sun and save energy.

4.) Seal leaks. You wouldn’t believe how much money is literally going out the window when you have a lot of cracks around your windows and doors.

5.) Did you know that some electric company lower their rates after 8:00? You should contact your electric provider and find out if this is the case for you. Doing laundry and other energy consuming tasks, you could be saving money!

6.) Adjust your water heater. You may have it set way hotter than it needs to be burning unnecessary energy and money.

7.) Wash your clothes in cold water. Close to 90% of the energy used by your washer is to heat the water. That is a lot when you imagine how many loads of laundry your family does each year.

8.) Install more plants. Leafy plants and trees around your home can help block the sun from shining into your house, onto your air conditioning unit and windows.

9.) I mentioned before about turning your computer off, but how about  putting your printer, scanner and fax machine in sleep mode?

10.) How about installing motion censors to replace your regular turn on and off lights? By having a motion censor or a light that is set on a timer, you save yourself the hassle of worrying that lights are being left on. (It just so happens that G Technology installs these, in case you were wondering). 😉
